If you’ve never been to the Dickson Street Mile, you’re missing one of Fayetteville’s most entertaining races!

Where else can you watch runners race through downtown alongside dogs sporting race bandanas, cheer on bartenders balancing trays of beer down Dickson Street, and then watch athletes tackle one of the toughest one-mile courses in the area? Hosted by the City of Fayetteville, this race perfectly captures the fun, quirky spirit of downtown Fayetteville.

The weather hot and muggy as expected. With temperatures hovering around 80 degrees under sunny July skies, fast times were hard to come by. But that’s summer running, and honestly, we wouldn’t expect anything else.

For Arkansas Track Club’s Road Team, the Dickson Street Mile marks the third race in our 2026–2027 race series. While the times on the clock are exciting, this race is about much more than chasing personal records. Summer conditions don’t always reveal an athlete’s true fitness, but they do reveal something just as valuable. How well did you execute your race plan? Did you stay mentally tough when the course got hard? What can you learn about yourself before the bigger races arrive this fall?

Those lessons become the building blocks for the season ahead.

Great Performances Across the Team

Our Junior Team kicked things off with an outstanding Kids Mile.

Jack Johnson exceeded the goal he’d set for himself, finishing 2nd Overall in 6:05. As an added bonus, his performance earned him a brand-new pair of New Balance running shoes courtesy of race sponsor Rush Running. Needless to say, he left Dickson Street with a pretty big smile.

Julie Johnson also had an outstanding race, capturing 1st Place Female in the 12–13 age group with a time of 6:52.

Also racing in the Open Mile was Nina Bernstein, who trains through private coaching with Erin Warren. Nina finished in 7:19, earning 5th in the Female 30–39 age group.

The Open Mile featured a fun family challenge. Jack had also set a goal time for his mom, Rachel Johnson, before the race. Thankfully for Mom, she met the challenge, finishing in 7:37 and placing 7th in the Female 30–39 age group. It’s become one of their favorite race-day traditions, and this year, they both walked away happy.

The Competitive Mile brought some of the fastest runners of the morning, and Arkansas Track Club athletes rose to the challenge.

Rather than staying in her comfort zone, Amber D’Angelo chose to race in the Competitive Mile. The decision paid off. She won the Female 40–49 age group with a time of 6:26, finishing behind only athletes in their twenties!

Josh Manning had one of the biggest breakthroughs of the morning, running a personal-record 5:10. His performance earned him 7th Overall and 3rd Place in the Male 30–39 age group, proving that the hard work he’s put in this summer is paying off.

Building Toward Fall

Next up is the Run for the Grapes 5K in Tontitown. While it’s the fourth race on our schedule, don’t expect our athletes to treat it as an all-out effort. For many of them, the race will simply replace part of a scheduled training run before they log more miles afterward.

That’s because our eyes are on the bigger picture.

Every workout, every race, every lesson learned in the summer heat is preparing us for one of the highlights of the season—the Chile Pepper Festival in early October on the University of Arkansas cross country course. That’s where cooler temperatures, stronger fitness, and months of consistent training come together.

Until then, we’ll keep showing up, putting in the work, learning from every race, and enjoying the journey together.
